I had the opportunity to meet Bill Gates as he visited Queen Mary University of London for a Q&A for students, bringing students together to discuss leadership & life lessons and the impact of AI on education, work and healthcare. It was an incredible opportunity to be part of, seeing the student community come together with students from all backgrounds and levels of study to watch and learn, whilst representing students. The biggest privilege was being able to meet Bill and present the question ‘how can we embed AI in education without overstepping or removing humans and teachers from the process?’ It’s important to never remove humans, to ensure responsible use that still provokes critical thought, where AI is a tool that can be used to further explore a topic finding trends and summarising information fast. When these responses become tied into those of the wider conversations at the event, where Bill reflected that “there are some studies who say AI will cause students to be lazier, […] And then there’s if you’re somebody who’s truly curious and really wants to learn the stuff, this is the most magical time ever...” I can’t disagree – I also think it’s a really good quote. I also appreciated hearing Bill’s perspective on success. Success can only be relative to what you want to achieve - are you happy to take lots of risk or are you happy to contribute and further existing fields, companies and structures? Both can be true, despite their differences. What I took away from this was that success is ultimately how you define it, that it isn't achieved in the same way by everyone. From starting out with goofy ideas and creating games, to discovering a love for software, and eventually realising that becoming CEO of Microsoft was his own obsession, I enjoyed seeing this idea of success explored through Bill’s own journey. It’s a perspective I hope to carry forward into my future and my current role – not all success relies on becoming a billionaire; it’s about making progress, creating impact and having the ability to change people’s lives, whilst still enjoying & having fun in the work & projects carried out. I have passionately pursued this purpose as a business leader in Corporate America with M&M and Pepsi Cola, as the first female CEO of Iceland’s Chamber of commerce and as an executive and non-executive director for diverse businesses. An entrepreneur at heart, I joined the founding team of Reykjavik University where I founded the Executive Education department and led a successful initiative focused on empowering women and girls as entrepreneurs, leaders and investors. In 2007 I co-founded an investment firm with the vision to incorporate feminine values and ESG metrics into finance. The company made international headlines when it successfully survived Iceland’s infamous economic meltdown. In 2016, I ran for President as an independent candidate with no prior political experience and surprised everyone as I emerged from an initial 1% in the polls to becoming the runner-up with nearly 30% of the vote. <br><br>I have an international MBA from Thunderbird and have lived and worked in the US, the UK and across the Nordics. My work has led me to the TED stage several times and I have delivered keynotes and participated in dialogues about new visions for leadership for companies and conferences around the world. Newsweek named me to a list of 150 women who “shake the world” and the New Yorker called me a “Living Emoji of Sincerity”.
